Founded in 1965 in Toronto, Canada, Design International quickly built a reputation for truly innovative design, particularly in retail architecture. So much so that many of their design features have since become industry benchmarks. Driven by a philosophy of shaping local stories to provide unique experiences for every visitor, the practice continues to push the boundaries of retail architecture, winning many international awards. From its strong retail base, the practice has grown its expertise across a range of sectors, including mixed-use developments, residential, hotels and hospitality as well as transport hubs. Operating globally, Design International is currently working on key projects in Europe, India, the Americas and the Middle East, as well as innovative new mixed-use developments in China.
The practice has experienced steady and sustainable growth since its inception, and from its current headquarters in London has extended its influence and operations to offices in Milan, Shanghai, and Dubai. Today, it employs around 120 people worldwide.
The influence of Design International is celebrated this month by the release of a new book Motion Buildings Meeting Places published by Mondadori Electa, the renowned Italian publisher specialising in books about the visual arts. The book describes how Design International has grown to be a powerful force in the world of architecture and examines some of the amazing projects and buildings which have earned its reputation.
