City Identities

Whether it's to attract tourism, foreign investment or simply civic pride, cities increasingly must vie for attention in the same way brands do. But unlike brands, cities are sprawling, complex, multifaceted entities. No matter how inclusive the solution, someone is left out. That's why some of the most interesting examples, like Milton Glaser's iconic I ♡ NY, are also the simplest.

City Identities is an exhibition that explores how cities and neighbourhoods express their identities to the rest of the world - and what it is they choose to express. We bring together some of the most provoking examples, and go deeper into the process of distilling an entire city or neighbourhood into a single marque, campaign or tagline.

This exhibition accompanies the release of Know Your Place, the definitive guide to creating places with purpose.

Place Press is a publisher exploring the intersection between people, places and culture. Their first book, Otl Aicher’s Isny, looks at small German town in the 1970s, that turned heads internationally with a boundary-pushing modernist identity in black and white.
