Circling the City – a walk round the historic boundary of the Square Mile

This is a pair of 2 hour walks which circles the historic City of London - the so-called Square Mile.

In the morning, we trace the line of the Roman and Medieval Wall which for centuries formed a very visible boundary around the City of London. We go from Blackfriars to the Tower of London. On the way we find reminders of the walled city in the names of buildings and streets and spot quite a few remnants of the wall which have somehow survived. We see the locations of the seven vehicle gates and learn why at three of them there is a church dedicated to St Botolph.

In the afternoon we look at the southern boundary as we see the City from the river side. We start at Tower Hill, crossing London Bridge and over into historic Bankside - home to the entertainments and activities that the City did not want. On the way, we get some great views of the City skyline which has changed so much in recent years. We return to the City over Blackfriars Bridge

You can do the whole walk on one day or you can do just the morning or the afternoon section.
