Fitzrovia Modern
(A walking tour of Modernist Fitzrovia.)
From art deco flourishes to brutalist outcrops, Fitzrovia compresses an improbable amount of twentieth-century ambition into a few walkable streets — much of it quietly disappearing.
These were buildings designed with purpose: to signal that everyone belonged here, that the city was made for ordinary people as much as for institutions and ideas.
This tour is for long-term residents and newcomers alike — for anyone who has ever stopped on a Fitzrovia pavement and wondered what that building was trying to say, and to whom.
Come along now. Before it's gone.
Location
North West Corner of Fitzroy Square (opposite No.22)
W1T 6EL
The tour host will be carrying a 'the modernist' tote bag.
Nearest station:
Great Portland Street Underground
Set aside around two hours, wear your most comfortable walking shoes, and keep an eye on the forecast — this is London, after all. The route winds through public streets, so stay alert to traffic and the usual urban obstacles. Accessibility on the day will depend on the route and streetscape..
