Goodbye to a Building; Hello to an Icon

Join us for a special event, inspired by the 1976 BBC documentary that marked the move from the Old Vic, ‘the most famous English theatre in the world’ to ‘Britain’s newest theatre’ of the National Theatre company.
Kenneth Tynan, then Literary Manager of the NT, is the presenter of ‘Goodbye to a Building’ first shown in March 1976. Previewing the Lasdun-designed South Bank venue, the film is a farewell and a tribute to the Old Vic Theatre, which has its 200th anniversary in 2018.
Accompanied by a handling session of artefacts from the NT archive, the screening will be followed by a 90min tour of the South Bank building.
The day will examine how the identity of a 'national theatre' has evolved from early proposals to today's iconic building.
