Newman Passage installation and exhibition - Opening Event at KHBT Studio - London Festival of Architecture

Newman Passage installation and exhibition – Opening Event at KHBT Studio

KHBT (Karsten Huneck/Bernd Truempler) and the Manchester School of Architecture are hosting an evening at KHBT Studio talking about their installation in Newman Passage and the work of Manchester School of Architecture.

The event will explore the identity of the mews that stems from a rich architectural heritage and famous events and stories.

KHBT’s studio is situated within Newman Passage, a quirky little 3 storey high building that once was a garage for horse carriages. It is also the London branch of KHBT's research network osa_office for subversive architecture.

The Victorian cast iron circular stair that links each level is an architectural gem in itself and is just one of countless traditional architectural elements that can be discovered in the Passage. This incredibly rich setting made the Newman Passage an ideal backdrop for film and photography shootings as well as appearing in novels and other literature. George Orwell and Thomas Dylan were regular at the Newman Arms Pub that forms one entrance into the Passage and the Pub also appeared in their novels. The small alleyway was also the backdrop for the famous film Peeping Tom that was shot here in 1959. Well-known artists and creative lived and work here and Archigram’s first office appeared to be in Newman Passage as well. Large groups appear frequently for activities such as Geocaching and Pokemon and London Walking Tours have the Newman Passage regularly on their itinerary.

Students from Karsten Huneck's (KHBT) MArch Unit USE (Urban Spatial Experimentation) of the Manchester School of Architecture are investigating the nature and the potentials of Newman Passage through proposing interventions within the whole Passage as well as utilising KHBT’s studio building and developing ideas for future proposals for Newman Passage.

3 selected interventions will be installed within the Passage and research/future proposals will be exhibited within KHBT's studio. Visitors will enter a world of the past, the present and the future passage.

From the 8 to 29 June you will also be able to see see the following installations in Newman Passage:
The Stage / Installation that plays on the notion of the passage being a set design on the roof of KHBT's studio
Ancient Light / Artistic reinterpretation of the signage that represented the first rights to light regulations.
The Historical Mutiny of the Modern World / Assemblage of historical architectural elements in the passage.
