Suburban Identities

Croydon has long been associated with the monotony of suburban life; an ordinary place on the edge of London where houses are affordable and families grow up. But these identities are changing, as living in the central boroughs of London is now so dramatically unaffordable for the vast majority of the city’s population.

The suburbs, and Croydon, in particular present a real opportunity to tackle the city’s acute housing shortage by carefully managing the densification of these places in a way that is true to their character and affordability, whilst making them more diverse and vibrant places to live and work.

Croydon Council has established its own private development company Brick by Brick to deliver high-quality residential development across a range of small suburban sites throughout the London Borough of Croydon.

This public exhibition explores Brick by Brick’s smaller sites programme, the first phase of which is currently on site, delivering over 1000 new homes for all tenures, across 30 sites in Croydon by 2019. Brick by Brick has worked with a range of imaginative and insightful London-based architecture practices, including Common Ground Architects, to create characterful and well-designed new homes that everyday people can enjoy.

Exhibition Open: Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-4pm
